Finley Hospital Auxiliary Op Shop received a visit from members of the Tocumwal Accredited Visitors Centre last Wednesday, and received a very warm welcome from President Cheryl Bodycoat.
The visitors were taking part in an op shop tour of the region, which included Berrigan, Cobram, Finley, Mulwala, Tocumwal and Yarrawonga.
Small country towns are well known for their opportunity centres run by either Rotary, Vinnies, CWA, Red Cross and other charity organisations.
President Cheryl gave a very interesting talk on how the Hospital Auxiliary, which currently has 32 members, has been going since 1938 (87 years this year) and has operated the op shop solely for fundraising since the late 1970s from about 14 locations.
The current building was bought by the Finley Hospital, with the Auxiliary paying off the loan of about $12,000 to the Hospital's Commission.
Ownership was later changed to the Auxiliary.
With the help of various members of the community, the premises has been extended, and the business continues to flourish.
“All monies raised through the Op Shop goes into funds to buy equipment and materials for the Finley Hospital.” Mrs Bodycoat explained.
President Cheryl also went into the history of the original part of the building.
“The front of the shop is one of the oldest buildings in Finley.
“Reports show that a lady by the name of Mary Murphy built the hotel next door and three months later opened this building.”
The group of visitors thanked Cheryl for hosting the visit, before going on to the Finley Second Hand Shop and Shabby 2 Chic Opportunity Shop.
They then continued on to visit the other towns in the op shop trail.
Note: The Finley Hospital Op Shop will be holding a half price sale commencing tomorrow – full details are available at the shop.

There are always interesting activities happening at the town libraries in the Berrigan Shire region, and this includes the International Women’s Day Luncheon.
This will take place at Barooga Sporties this Friday.
Alice Gorman will be the guest speaker.
In the next event, ex-Finleyite Susan Mackie/Tyrrell will be returning to Finley Library on Wednesday, March 19 to meet with members of the community at 1.30pm.
Susan, author of the best-selling Barrington Series books, came to Finley in 1972 as a young girl with her parents Marian and Gordon Tyrrell.
She attended Finley Primary School and Finley High School before taking a position as a cadet journalist with the Southern Riverina News.
She had wanted to be an author from the age of eight; however, her careers teacher at the high school advised her to take up journalism as being an author “was not a real job”.
Members of Finley CWA will provide afternoon tea at a cost of $5 per person.
All welcome to attend.
