Some 70 years later, now with five children, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, the couple celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.
Fay said she remembered the wedding being on a very hot day.
“We had the reception at Austral House, in Bridge St (west), opposite Hide’s Bakery,” she said.
“It was so hot, the men were told they could take off their jackets.”
The Dennises then headed for a honeymoon at Lakes Entrance.
“We went via gravel road, Mt Hotham gravel road, at the time,” Fay said.
“And then on to Warrnambool, to visit family.”
Fay said one of her fondest memories was taking the family on a caravanning holiday, in Victoria, NSW and Queensland.
The wedding had been a long time coming, with the couple enjoying time together from a young age.
They first met as the Warnocks and the Dennises had neighbouring farms at Swanpool/Lima South.
“From teenagers we both played tennis,” Fay said.
Harry and Fay were born and bred locally, only moving away in their early years of marriage for Harry to take up a teaching positions in the Geelong area.
They returned to the north-east for Harry to teach at Molyullah and then Swanpool primary schools.
“Harry taught all five of our children at Swanpool Primary,” Fay said.
“And he finished his teaching career at the Benalla East Primary school.”
Both Harry and Fay have a love of gardening — Harry the vegie garden; Fay loves flowers.
“We both enjoyed old-time dancing at the Swanpool Hall, Benalla Railway Hall, Lima South Hall, Benalla Town Hall and Benalla Seniors Centre, until mobility became an issue,” Fay said.
“We were able to enjoy an anniversary celebration on (January) 11, with all our children and many of the grand and great-grandchildren.”
