Taking on host squad the Hurley's Hotel Hounds, the reigning premier had stumbled early in a small chase before Brett joined Taylor Beard at the crease.
The Northerners all-rounder — and reigning Lightfoot medallist — then peeled off 47 from 27 deliveries to steer his side home with five wickets and more than an over to spare.
His ability to ooze calm at the crease allayed any thoughts of a further collapse, and once he got himself set he was able to pick off poor deliveries at will.
From the same end of the pitch he threatened both the fine-leg and long-off Cardamone Real Estate signs with big sixes at either end of his knock, eventually striking seven boundaries in his unbeaten dig.
The Hounds had started their innings with superb intent as Paul Newman flayed the Mud Dogs’ bowling to all parts of his favourite Kyabram Recreation Reserve.
But once he departed for a brisk 35 from 25 deliveries the Mud Dogs were able to turn the screws through the work of their slower bowlers.
Much to the delight of the bus-load of North Geelong supporters who made the trip up to Kyabram to support the reigning premier, Mitch Troy and Alistair McCann were among those tweakers.
Troy bowled four overs on the bounce for an outstanding 2-9, while McCann had 1-13 from three.
Liam Smith (1-20 from three) was also in fine form, with Brett, Beard and Angus Martin among the wickets with one apiece.
Kyle Mueller (24), Dylan Cuttriss (16) and Jedd Wright (15) were among the other contributors for the Hounds with the bat as the side reached 117 all-out on the final delivery of its 20 overs.
Joining Brett as impressive with the bat for the victors was Beard with 37 from 38, while Layton McCann hit 13 up the top of the order.
Cuttriss had two wickets for the Hounds, with Michael Archer, Darrin Ohlsen and Jackson McLay all snaring one to help have the Mud Dogs 4-38 at one stage in the chase.
But the 57-run stand between Brett and Beard which followed proved match-defining.
