The canteen is currently being operated part-time through an arrangement with Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE food services.
The Victorian Department of Education advised the canteen would definitely be in operation for Term 2 and if there was any delay to the contract, the school would continue to operate it in the interim.
The money involved in the contract is still being negotiated, as is the decision whether the school will subsidise anything to do with the canteen once the contract has been allocated.
However, the school will cover the cost of any required outfitting and renovations.
Regarding regulation of food item prices, a GSSC spokesperson said the school would seek advice from the Department of Education, families and various key stakeholders to ensure affordability for students and families.
The food available at the canteen will strictly adhere to the selection that has been endorsed by the Department of Education.
GSSC also provides free breakfast and lunch to disadvantaged students through the Breakfast Club Program.
The new high school will continue to work closely with GOTAFE in future partnerships, the spokesperson said.
“Greater Shepparton Secondary College are very grateful for the support that GOTAFE have provided us in Term 1 while we have been establishing our permanent canteen arrangements,” the spokesperson said.
