In October 2022, council resolved to lobby the Federal Government to change the date of Australia’s national holiday due to it deciding the date was not a date of celebration for all, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
The council formed a community stakeholder group, comprising Australia Day committee members, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous community groups, with a summary of the themes emerging from these conversations presented to council.
Apart from resolving to lobby the Federal Government to change the date of Australia Day, council also resolved to conduct community engagement on the proposal of having a day of community celebration that was not held on January 26, to be more inclusive, reflective of the full history of Australia and that was culturally respectful.
Community members have now been invited to share their views on what should happen in 2024 and beyond.
“The feedback received will be reviewed alongside the information gathered in 2022, and a proposal will be developed for the future of council’s role on January 26 in Greater Shepparton,” council said.
