With an additional roll of the purple compost bags to be delivered either this month or next, residents are again encouraged to use the bags to dispose of food scraps, helping contamination rates with green waste bins.
Since council began distributing the bags five years ago, nearly 40,000 tonnes of food scraps and garden waste have avoided landfill.
Council infrastructure director Phil Hoare said citizens, businesses and the wider environment all benefited from using the compostable bags.
“It has not only saved ratepayers’ money but it also has wonderful benefits for our environment and economy, as the composted material is predominately used on farm land to improve the health of the soil and its productivity and avoids taking up valuable landfill space,” he said.
“The purple compostable bags meet strict Australian standards and are specifically designed to break down in the composting process, so please only use these council-provided bags in your kitchen caddy and green lid bin. Keeping contamination low is important as it ensures we fully reap the benefits of the service.
“I encourage residents to keep up the good work and help us work together to reduce waste to landfill and protect our environment.”
Residents who do not receive a roll of bags by the end of February should contact the council's customer service team on 5832 9700.
