However, for Goulburn Valley Water, it is a complex factor in its latest project.
Starting Tuesday, March 11, the company will replace an ageing water supply pipeline on Fair St in Shepparton as part of a five-year, $13 million upgrade program to enhance the region’s water infrastructure.
One notable aspect of the works is the trial of a new product designed to safely manage the removal of the existing asbestos cement pipeline, which can pose hazards if disturbed.
“We are excited to be leading this trial, which is a world first using this technique and product,” GVW managing director Steve Capewell said.
“The new product will hold all the broken pipeline in place, so it does not cause any harm to workers or residents.
“This replacement technique could benefit water businesses across Australia in the future.”
To ensure safety, all contractors and GVW staff will wear protective equipment.
The pipeline, located under the nature strip, will be isolated throughout the duration of the project, with daily air testing conducted to maintain safety standards.
Lead contractor Ashworth Demolition is spearheading the operation, supported by partners Rankin Plumbing, R&R McClure Excavations, WSP Engineers and CAF Consulting.
The works, which are expected to run from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, will involve road and footpath closures, and all vehicles will need to be moved off the street during work hours.
Although residents will still have access to their homes on foot, commuters and visitors should anticipate delays.
Dr Capewell acknowledged that while the project could cause some short-term disruptions, it would bring long-term benefits.
“We have been in contact with Fair St residents (about the disruptions) ... and that the project will lead to service improvements by reducing bursts and water supply interruptions to these customers,” he said.
GVW will keep the community informed with regular updates, including SMS notifications for residents who register their mobile numbers.
The project has also been notified to WorkSafe, the Environmental Protection Authority and Greater Shepparton City Council.
