In round two action at the weekend it was Rich River Rebels who were felled by the Warriors’ sword in a tight 6-67 to 4-59 result.
Although he played down his own efforts — which read as unbeaten in two doubles rubbers — Numurkah's Nick Fenaughty was full of praise for his team.
“I am really happy with the start, it's been really, really good,” Fenaughty said.
“I don't know that I contributed a lot to the cause on the weekend, but it really takes the pressure off when you have four men available because you only need three.
“We were able to spread the load well and it was a real team effort across the board.
“Everyone stepped up to get the win and I was really proud of our guys and girls.”
Grant Chappell, Ashlea Andrews, Harley McCarthy and Lisa Niglia were also involved in set victories across the contest for the Warriors, who — like most summer sport teams — are just as happy to be out there as winning.
“It's been an interrupted 2020,” Fenaughty said.
“It puts a lot into perspective for a lot of people. Resilience is high and a lot of people are just really grateful to be out there.”
Erik Holt-Crossman, Clayton Scott and Leanne More were involved in set wins for the Rebels, and Fenaughty was excited for how even the top tier competition is shaping up to be this summer.
“They have a lot of good players and we did well to get the win,” he said.
“I'd hate to try and pick who's going to win the flag.
“It's really good for country tennis, a lot of credit has to go to the people who have been working hard behind the scenes in the area to make sure tennis is on the rise.”
Shepparton Bulls also snared consecutive triumphs to start the season, defeating Numurkah-Mooroopna 6-69 to 4-48.
The Mud Dogs held their own across the clash — with Mark Mills and David Poole impressing — but the Bulls were too strong in the end, with Eliza Long and Robbie Mifka dominating.
Shepparton Hornets (8-66 to 2-53) and Echuca Lawn (6-71 to 4-55) were also in the winners’ circle, over Shepparton Lakers and Bendigo South respectively.
