Created in 2016, Sunshine Bendigo supports families in need, with volunteers distributing clean, pre-loved baby essentials like clothing and nursery equipment.
In its nine years, the volunteer-run organisation has supported about 7500 children.
During the October 2022 floods, its services expanded to Rochester, Elmore and Echuca, ultimately starting the Sunshine North Central branch.
Since July 2023, Sunshine North Central has provided a mobile service to fill a gap in services around the region.
Parents can access their resources through referrals and residents can donate supplies they no longer need to be rehomed.
During the 2023-24 financial year, Sunshine North Central was able to support 422 children with $113,261 worth of items.
In her citation, Glenda was commended on her passion for supporting disadvantaged, vulnerable community members through creating and leading Sunshine Bendigo.
“Glenda’s commitment, drive and vision has ensured that Sunshine’s services are known to all local support agencies and a wide range of sponsors and supporters who are also committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged babies and children,” it said.
Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to 19-year-old Pollyanna Smith for her community contributions, including as a unit leader at Girl Guides Bendigo and coach at Bendigo’s Cheer and Dance.
A Wiradjuri woman, Pollyanna helped develop the Girl Guides Victoria reconciliation action plan and is part of the Dhelk Dja Regional Action Group.
City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Andrea Metcalf congratulated the pair, recognising their hard work to better the community.
“I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Glenda Serpell and Pollyanna Smith on becoming the 2025 Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year respectively,” she said.
“Both of you have made a significant contribution to the Greater Bendigo community in such positive ways.
“These awards acknowledge your dedication and commitment to others and for the enthusiasm, drive and energy that you bring that is inspiring and heartwarming.”
