Ms Lovell in parliament recently called for release of the safety audit, ‘‘with a view to installing a traffic signal mast arm on the south-east corner of the intersection applicable to westbound traffic in Nixon St’’.
Regional Roads Victoria acting regional director Nathan Matthews answered questions about a safety audit this week.
‘‘We’ve heard community concerns about this intersection and assessed improvements through a road safety audit,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve acted on recommendations to improve visibility for westbound traffic on Nixon St by installing a new LED traffic signal lantern.’’
The News understands RRV did a safety audit in July last year to review the traffic signals at the intersection of Wyndham St and Nixon St.
It is understood the audit found the traffic signals at the intersection complied with relevant guidelines.
In parliament last week, Ms Lovell said the intersection was controlled with traffic signals facing all four directions, with traffic signals facing north, south and east attached to mast arms, ‘‘high in the air in clear view of motorists’’.
‘‘Motorists travelling west on Nixon St approaching Wyndham St do not face a traffic signal mast arm and are forced to rely on traffic signals at normal ground level, one slightly obstructed from view by a tree,’’ she said.
Ms Lovell argued that when westbound traffic approached the intersection, ‘‘motorists are becoming confused, as the Welsford St mast arm signal is more visible than the lights that are actually applicable to them.’’
‘‘The installation of a traffic signal mast arm at the intersection of Nixon St and Wyndham St for westbound traffic would avert motorist confusion, improve signal visibility and help prevent further collisions at this intersection,’’ Ms Lovell said.
