Foodbank NSW & ACT hosted a fresh produce food relief pop-up in Deniliquin to provide access to fresh, healthy and nutritious produce for people experiencing food insecurity in the community.
From 9.30am to 1pm, free fruit, vegetables and pantry staples and personal care items were available for people in need.
The Rotary Club of Deniliquin was instrumental in co-ordinating the pop-up and had members in attendance providing one of their famous barbecue lunches.
The initiative was funded by Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN), who partnered with Food Bank NSW & ACT and Edward River Council to put on the event.
MHPN representatives also offered free health checks and vaccinations.
Members of the Deniliquin Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC) also supported the event, handing out copies of the Health Services Guide, local resources magnets and information of the after-hours GP Telehealth service.
Foodbank NSW & ACT chief operating officer Samantha Prescott said seven tonnes of food was offered at the Deniliquin pop-up, to provide essential, fresh, and nutritious produce for those experiencing food insecurity.
“It was a particularly timely event, given the anticipated increase in calls for assistance to local support services as the cost of living continues to rise,” she said.
Deni LHAC member Lourene Liebenberg said people were incredibly appreciative“, and Rotary Club of Deniliquin president Iain Goodway expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped on the day.
“We are deeply thankful to everyone involved in bringing the fresh produce pop up to life, from the volunteers who generously gave their time to the organisations that made it possible,” Mr Goodway said.
“A special thanks to Foodbank, Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network, Deniliquin Local Health Advisory Group, Soul Pattinson Pharmacy, the medical students, Edward River Council, and the Rotary barbecue team.
“Your efforts have provided much-needed support to our community, and we couldn’t have done it without you.”
