At 10.30pm on May 8, 1999, Benalla’s Alan Riley closed the door of the town’s once vital signal box for the last time.

A little less than 26 years later, the historic building will be removed as part of the redevelopment of the Benalla Station precinct as part of the Inland Rail Project.
While it’s heavy leavers and kilometres of metal cables are now just a relic, superseded by technology, the box itself is much loved in the community.
On Tuesday evening, March 18, Benalla’s Rene Martens took one last trip out to the railyard to capture it under the stars.
