Established in 1992, the literary awards promote and extend the tradition of storytelling of Australian culture.
The awards continue to hold an open category, alongside junior and youth categories.
Entries are now open for the four youth categories — junior short story, junior poetry for writers 12 and under, youth short story and youth poetry for writers aged 13-17.
Furphy Foundation is in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council, La Trobe University and Goulburn Valley Libraries for the awards.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said the awards were a great opportunity to recognise the potential and talent of young writers across the region.
“The Furphy Literary Award is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to express their voices through literature and gain experience in writing short stories and poetry,’’ he said.
“We look forward to seeing many great collections of work from our community.
“We encourage many young writers to submit an entry and share their unique story.
“After all, to quote Joseph Furphy, everyone can write at least one good story.”
Each category has a first place prize of $300, followed by second prize of $100 and third prize of $50. Applications can be made via online submissions.
Entries close on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 11.59pm.
