In response to workforce shortages, grants were established in 2023 to offer free university degrees for students enrolling in secondary school teaching degrees in 2024 and 2025 with scholarships covering their student debts.
This groundbreaking initiative includes incentives for graduates who commit to working in Victorian government schools for two years post-graduation.
For Mr Gribble, this initiative served as the catalyst for a career change, prompting him to enrol at La Trobe University and pursue his aspiration of becoming a PE teacher.
Mr Gribble started working as an education support engagement officer at GSSC last year and found the role enlightening and fulfilling.
His responsibilities involved motivating students facing challenges attending classes to return to the classroom. Mr Gribble found immense satisfaction from forming connections with initially resistant students and witnessing their return to the learning environment over time.
In his new role as a teacher’s aide, Mr Gribble focuses this year on supporting students directly in the classroom, helping them with various aspects of their learning, from writing and reading to building confidence to complete their tasks.
Serving as an educational support worker has given Mr Gribble a unique opportunity to gain insight into the teaching methods employed by teachers, preparing him for his upcoming journey as a teacher.
Mr Gribble will be starting his teaching diploma in March, a prospect that both excites and challenges him.
Balancing full-time work with afternoon studies will demand careful organisation and prioritisation, but Mr Gribble is determined to achieve his dream.
Encouraging others contemplating a career change, Mr Gribble was emphatic.
“Go for it!” he said.
A teaching career is a meaningful way to make a difference and forge lasting relationships with students, witnessing their growth and development as a profoundly rewarding incentive.
As Mr Gribble embarks on this transformative journey, he eagerly anticipates the positive impact he can make in the lives of his future students.
