With new cases every day of coronavirus (COVID-19) the total number of people in Victoria as confirmed with the virus was 94 – and 375 nationally – as the Kyabram Free Press went to press.
The new cases include people with ages ranging from their teens to 60s.
At the weekend one was a student – a known contact of case 17, a teacher from Carey Grammar.
Kyabram District Health Service chief executive, Anne McEvoy, said the health service was taking a vigilant stance to reduce the spread of the virus.
“We are encouraging the community that if you had flu-like symptoms, have recently been overseas or in close contact with a confirmed coronavirus case to ring KDHS on 5857 0200 before presenting for any treatment, as it vital that we protect our staff and patients as much as possible,” she said.
Warramunda Village has officially implemented precautionary measures to minimise the risk of its residents contracting the COVID-19 virus.
Multiple local events scheduled over the next few weeks have been cancelled in response to the pandemic.

League says it is business as usual – for now,
At the time of printing, the Kyabram Free Press was awaiting news from AFL Goulburn Murray in regard to an update on the season.
Kyabram District Football Netball League is still hoping to have its 2020 season start on time.
President Fraser Kerrins was yesterday urging clubs to continue with “business as usual” as the league awaited further advice on the coronavirus.
“At this stage we are still doing ahead with the start of the season,” he said.
Kerrins said he wanted clubs to continue to prepare for the season as normal, though with extra attention paid towards hygiene.

Annette’s got flower power
Kyabram’s Annette Kennedy got a little more than she bargained for when she decided to enter her first African Violet flower show at the weekend.
Judges were obviously impressed as they awarded her three first placings, three seconds and gave thirds from just 12 plans she entered in the novice section of the North West African Violet Club Sho at Essendon.
“Yes I got placings with 11 of the 12 plants I entered,” a naturally proud Annette said this week.
“I was hopeful of getting a couple of awards, but I didn’t expect anything like this.”
Annette was rightfully satisfied with her performance, as she only started growing African Violets last August.

Ex-Mayor wants action on new election dates
A former Mayor of Kyabram, Mrs Mary Bowman, is encouraging townspeople to write letters complaining about the extension of 12 months before council elections are held.
Mrs Bowman said on Friday she had spoken to many people about the recently announced decision.
Groups from Kyabram and the Waranga Shire intend to write letters of complaint.
The election dates for Campaspe Shire and other Goulburn-Northeastern municipalities were extended from March 1996 to March 1997.
Former councillors in Echuca, Kyabram and Shepparton have expressed dissatisfaction with the decision.

Unbeatable brigade
Fire Brigade’s dominance of the KDCA A-grade competition continued at the weekend when it claimed its fourth pennant and back-to-back flags with an emphatic win over underdogs Girgarre.
It was a memorable day for the club, with the team’s A Reserve side also scoring a comprehensive victory against Koyuga to complete the premiership double.
The recuperative powers of Girgarre, which have prevailed in some right situations throughout the season, deserted the club in its most crucial test as the Brigade strung together its 18 in the wins on end.
Girgarre captain Russ Morgan hoisted the white flag at the tea interval on Sunday with a session and a complete day still remaining.
With three wickets still in hand, a massive 331 runs on the board and a lead of 254 runs, Morgan admitted there was no point in continuing.

“Nightmare” crossing prompts' plea for school crowing control
Several “near tragedies” on school crossings this year have prompted the Mothers Club of one Kyabram school to request the Kyabram Town Council to apply for subsidy from the State Government, which would permit supervision of school crossings.
The request came from the St Augustines Mothers Club which claimed there was an urgent need for manned supervision at the crossings used by children attending St Augustine’s School.
A further query came from the Dawes Rd School Committee, which asked whether Council intended to take advantage of the State Government subsidy for paid school crossings attendants.
However, the minimum standard which is accepted by the Road Safety and Traffic Authority to allow subsidy for supervision of school crossings is for 200 vehicles to pass over the crossings in one given hour and 50 children to use the crossing in the same hour.

Basketball at the Town Hall?
The Kyabram Town Hall could be used as a venue for Olympic rules basketball this season.
A request from the Kyabram-Tongala Amateur Basketball Association to Tuesday night’s meeting of the Kyabram Town Council sought to use the Town Hall as a venue for junior competition during the winter months.
Senior competition is conjectured in the Tongala Youth Club Hall, and because that is the only indoor facility for basketball in the area, there is not enough accommodation for juniors to take part in winter basketball competition.
If use of the town hall is permitted, it will provide a venue for approximately 300 juniors to play basketball three or four nights each week.
The matter has been left to the public properties committee.

Jim, oh so cool about his Australian cap
Kyabram’s first international cricketer, Jim Higgs arrived back in his hometown this week playing it as cool as ever.
If the 24-year-old leg spinner, the biggest wicket-taker in Sheffield cricket this season, was elated at his selection in the Australian team to tour England later this year, it wasn’t detectable.
“I really haven’t given much thought,” Jim commented in his own nonchalant manner, adding, “I didn’t really give myself much chance of being selected.”
Jim was in Brisbane with the Victorian Shield team when the new was broken to him, on Monday evening, that he won an Australian cap.
Jim was genuinely surprised at his selection.
