Council is seeking to incorporate an alternative measure to remove glass from the current recycling bin and make changes to the frequency of kerbside bin collections to reduce waste going into landfill.
The public consultation follows the rejection of a transition plan to a fourth glass bin by councillors in November last year.
The plan was to also make green waste collection weekly and red general rubbish bins fortnightly.
The paper outlined additional costs of up to $56 a year for households to implement a glass bin, but did not address the additional cost of households having to upsize red bins — which could take the additional cost to nearly $300.
Councillors instead voted to request a revised plan for the current three-bin system, to be presented to the March council meeting, as well as a separate options paper on the merits of a glass bin.
Councillors also raised concerns that the transition plan did not take account of the impact of a container deposit scheme being introduced in Victoria.
Mayor Kim O’Keeffe encouraged residents to take time to review the different options for the best way to remove glass from the current recycle bins.
“Changes to glass recycling are being introduced across the state and we want to know people’s thoughts on these changes,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
Cr O’Keeffe said it was important to understand the community’s preferred option of disposing of glass.
