Berrigan Shire Council has issued a construction tender for a new fishing deck.
It is part of the ongoing Foreshore Redevelopment project, which is now just two steps away from completion.
Council general manager Karina Ewer said the deck will generate a new dynamic in fishing in the local area, with the ability to find quality fishing honey holes becoming more available to even amateur anglers.
A scaled back concept of council’s original plans, Ms Ewer said the rising costs of materials forced council to defer plans for an amphitheatre on the foreshore for now.
“Originally it was going to be the amphitheatre and fishing station that would be the final stage of the Tocumwal Foreshore redevelopment, but costs have increased astronomically,” she said.
“We had to review what we were able to afford.
“The council felt that the fishing station was an area that would be used all year round, where as the amphitheatre was less likely to be used everyday.”
Ms Ewer said the idea of an amphitheatre on the Tocumwal Foreshore has not been abandoned, but will now be considered at a later date.
It will be looked at again when funding for the project is available.
The fishing deck is to be made of precast concrete, and will stretch out nine metres from the river bank that runs along Anzac Avenue in Tocumwal.
Construction is expected to begin by mid-October, and be completed in February 2023.
Ms Ewer said the aim is to have the fishing deck operation before the Easter camping rush.
The larger Foreshore Redevelopment project was the outcome of opportunities identified in the Tocumwal Landscape Concept Plan completed in 2016.
Other projects delivered as part of the project include the splash park and play space, and the recently opened foreshore retail and restaurant space.
