The singer talks about growing up, and how things were great when he was young.
But as he grew, he was taught to think certain ways, act certain ways, to be logical and cynical.
He had to conform to the expectations of society.
He had to say the right things, not create a scene, be presentable to the norms of society.
But then in the chorus, the singer laments that it is all too much for such a simple man, and he asks a very pertinent question: “Please tell me who I am?”.
In the craziness of life and expectations of the world around him, the singer had lost his way and no longer knew who he really was.
Have you ever felt that way? Felt that you no longer knew who you were?
Too many things may have happened to you, such that you are left asking the same question in the song: “Who am I and what am I doing here?”.
I have learnt, through hard experience, that times like this will eventually come to all of us.
Hard experiences will either break us or make us.
But God cares more about your character than your comfort.
He may allow things to come to us, but we choose how we react.
But I have discovered this; God knows our frailties, he remembers we are made from the dust (Psalm 103:14).
Before we were formed in our mother’s womb, He knew us (Jeremiah 1:5).
He calls to us in the worst of times, and simply asks us to trust Him.
That is not easy, but as a Christian, trust in God is the one thing that will shape us into the person He wants us to be.
