Sergeant Mark Phillips said the driver, who was airlifted to a Melbourne hospital, was driving a Suzuki Swift west on Old Dookie Rd with a male passenger, also in his 50s, about 12.10pm.
A Holden driven by a 52-year-old woman on Central Ave collided with the 56-year-old woman’s vehicle on the driver’s side.
Vehicles travelling in either direction on Old Dookie Rd face a stop sign to cross Central Ave.
The 52-year-old driver was accompanied by a 21-year-old female passenger.
The collision caused the Suzuki Swift to flip on to its side, Sgt Phillips said, with the driver's door facing down.
Meanwhile, the Holden travelling on Central Ave spun to face the opposite direction.
The 52-year-old driver was shocked and injured but walked away from the scene, Sgt Phillips said.
The male passenger in the flipped car did not sustain serious injuries.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said paramedics treated a woman in her 50s for lower body injuries after the Shepparton East crash, and she was flown by ambulance helicopter to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
