Campaspe Shire Council has announced a list of roads which will reduce speed limits following community concerns for the safety of both drivers and pedestrians.
From Monday, February 10, council’s operations teams will begin installation of new road signs in the following areas:
Breen Ave, Cooma Rd, South Boundary Rd and Lake Rd
On Breen Ave between Solar Bvd and Cooma Rd, the speed limit will reduce from 100km/h to 80km/h.
On South Boundary Rd, between Cooma Rd and McEwen Rd, the speed limit will become 80km/h along the entire stretch.
On Lake Rd, the 60km/h zone will extend to South Boundary Rd.
Bolitho Rd and Edis St
On Bolitho Rd, the speed limit from south of Thompsons Lane to the Allan St intersection will reduce from 100km/h to 60km/h.
On Edis St, the speed limit between Bolitho Rd and O’Keefe St will reduce from 80km/h to 60km/h.
The Department of Transport and Planning has approved changes to speed limits on following DTP roads:
McEwen Rd’s speed limit of 80km/h will now extend south of South Boundary Rd to reduce risk of road users at the McEwen Rd and South Boundary Rd intersection.
On Albion St and Edis St (west of Albion St) the speed limit will reduce from 60km/h to 50km/h to improve safety of the intersection and support new residential developments at Kyabram’s east.
Tania Chiswell, chair of the Kyabram Development Committee, said speed reductions for Bolitho Rd and Edis St would especially be welcome ahead of the completion of housing developments in that area.
However, she was concerned that council was not taking enough precautions to improve safety for road users at the Breen Ave, Bolitho Rd and Cooma Rd intersection.
She said most of the community concern derived from drivers going 80km/h around the bend of the intersection — even with a recommended 40km/h speed limit.
“If you’re recommending 40km/h but the speed limit is 80km/h, it sort of doesn’t make sense,” she said.
“That whole stretch of road (the corner from Breen Ave to Cooma Rd) should be 60km/h at least.
“(The speed changes) are a positive change... but I think it will take people a while to get used to the new limits.”
