The brigade was officially awarded the title of Community Organisation of the Year on Sunday, January 26, having been voted by the Euroa community for members’ significant dedication.
CFA and Ambulance Victoria rolled out the new Fire Medical Response (FMR) program in December 2024.
The program dispatched CFA brigades alongside ambulances to cardiac arrest emergencies, enabling CFA crews to perform crucial life-saving CPR, defibrillation and support to patients.
Euroa was among the first brigades to sign up to provide life-saving support in response to Triple Zero calls, alongside brigades in Tatura, Numurkah, Yarrawonga, Huntly, Kyneton, Bairnsdale, Orbost and Lakes Entrance.
Damon Rieusset, who is Euroa Fire Brigade’s captain of 15 years, said the acknowledgement was something to be proud of, however members were just happy to be of assistance to rural families in need.
“Although it is only in its infancy, it is nice for our members to be recognised for the efforts they put in,” Mr Rieusset said.
“We’re all ready and willing to go when needed.
“What it brings for the community is the greatest part.
“If it stops a family wondering if they could’ve done more, that’s the most important thing.”
The team is made up of over 14 volunteers who have completed more than 40 hours of professional face to face training by Ambulance Victoria and over 16 hours of online training to be deemed competent to provide this vital service.
“Everyone who put their hand up to do the training knew it wasn’t going to be an easy day in the office, but it’s for the greater good and we would highly recommend other brigades get involved in the program if they can,” Mr Rieusset said.
“Most of our members have done first aid training and were comfortable walking into the sessions with basic knowledge.
“However, it’s been pleasing to see the members gain the additional expertise and advance their abilities, all which will go a long way in providing them with greater confidence when faced with the task.”
The Rotary Club of Euroa nominated the brigade for the esteemed award, noting their efforts have not only improved the safety and wellbeing of the Euroa community, but also strengthened the bonds that hold the community together.
