Drivers who are caught using their mobile phone while driving will receive a $577 fine and lose four demerit points while drivers and passengers not wearing a seatbelt will receive a $385 fine and the loss of three demerit points.
Mobile and seat detection cameras began operating in April, using AI technology to capture high-resolution images of vehicles and detect any offences.
Victorian Police Minister Anthony Carbines has stressed the importance of the cameras, saying drivers have a responsibility to keep everyone on the road safe.
“We know driver distraction is a major contributor to serious and fatal collisions, and the time for complacency is over,” Mr Carbines said.
“These cameras will be deployed all over the state and they will catch those drivers not buckled up or distracted by their phones.”
Ten road safety cameras will also be upgraded along the Hume Freeway, while additional cameras will be installed at four new sites.
