But now, after winning a competition with a national chain store located outside Deniliquin, the pair took delivery of their dream car on Wednesday - a stunning, blue Ford Ranger Raptor.
The pair didn’t even realise they had entered a competition.
They simply purchased the motor oil they wanted, and swiped their loyalty card at the checkout as normal.
So when the call came through in late January, they had won $100,000 to put toward their dream vehicle, Gerry admitted she thought it was a scam at first.
When they were finally convinced it was the real deal, they were both floored.
The Thommers’ went car shopping in Deni straight away, but the only catch of their prize was the car would have to be provided by a pre-selected dealership in Dandenong.
The dealership added as many bells and whistles as they could to bring the purchase price up to $100,000.
Speaking to the Pastoral Times only hours after receiving the car on Wednesday, Gerald said he is yet to discover all the features of the Raptor.
“There’s so many buttons it’s like an plane,” Gerald said.
Avid caravan collectors and owners, Gerald and Geraldine, said ‘big rigs’ like the Ranger have always appealed to them.
And with the capacity of the Raptor, they have plans to upgrade to a bigger caravan and hopefully do some travelling.
