With a passion for rural medicine, Dr Michel has gained a reputation as a supportive mentor and colleague at Goulburn Valley Health.
It is these qualities that have seen him become the recipient of the 2023 Michael Kamenjarin Encouragement Award, in recognition of his work as a junior doctor at GV Health.
Dr Michel was born in Shepparton and attended Notre Dame College in the city before completing his VCE studies at Wesley College, Melbourne.
He studied biomedical science at Monash University and completed his postgraduate medicine studies at the University of Melbourne.
Throughout his studies at the University of Melbourne, he was part of the Rural Clinical School and extended rural cohort in Shepparton.
Post-studies, while working at GV Health, Dr Michel worked casually at the University of Melbourne, teaching clinical skills to first-year students.
When presenting Dr Michel with his award, GV Health emergency department senior medical officer Dr Carolyn Kamenjarin praised Dr Michel for his dedication and commitment to rural medicine.
“Kadison has been a dedicated and hard-working junior doctor, who has been involved in training and support of other junior staff members,” she said.
“He has been a role model and mentor for other doctors and has been actively involved in teaching medical students.”
She thanked Dr Michel for his hard work and dedication, and hailed him an inspiration.
“We are very proud of what he has achieved while he has been working at GV Health,” she said.
“He has a very bright future and we are sure he will continue to do amazing things.”
Dr Michel said he was grateful to receive the award and to be recognised for his hard work.
“[The award] has given me confidence and it reiterates that what I’m doing is the right thing and I’m doing well by it,” he said.
“I will continue with what I’m doing, as I must be doing something right.”
Dr Michael Kamenjarin was a valued general surgeon at GV Health until June 2015, and was strongly dedicated to the education and support of junior doctors.
He lost his life to multiple sclerosis and cancer in April 2021.
In memory of Dr Kamenjarin’s work at GV Health, the annual encouragement award was established in his honour.
