Six-year-old Dixie Nicholas not only went through with that change, but she also made a difference by donating her hair and raising an impressive $2500 for kids with cancer.
Wigs4Kids, an organisation that provides wigs to children who have lost hair while battling cancer, will also receive 35cm of long, blonde hair.
In October, when Dixie asked her parents Jess and Sean Nicholas if she could cut her hair like her friend’s short hair, her mum knew there was something special they could do.
“I’d seen friends on Facebook donate their hair. So, I thought because Dixie’s hair is so long — we should (donate) too,” Mrs Nicholas said.
“But (at first) she thought that I was cutting her hair off and that she was going to have to wear the wig.”
Mrs Nicholas set up a fundraising page for Wigs4Kids, shared it on social media, and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that followed.
The community rallied behind the push to raise money with Dixie’s teachers putting in some money, and Aussie Kindies hosting a Crazy Hair Day to fundraise.
The fundraising page attracted 56 generous donors — including friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers — who collectively contributed an impressive total of $2573.
Come December, Dixie — sitting in a swivel chair in hair salon, Craig’s Creations — was readier than ever to take the big chop.
Dixie’s mum said it was the first big cut she’s ever had.
“We’ve just had trims in the past, so it was a big cut for her,” she said.
Mrs Nicholas said she didn’t believe her daughter knew how impactful her hair, and the fundraising she had done could do for another kid.
“I don’t think she understood the gravity of what she was doing,” she said.
“But, we’re very proud of her.”
Dixie said she loves her short do, but her mum loves it even more.
“It’s a bit less time in the morning having to style it, so I couldn’t be happier,” Mrs Nicholas said.
