Throughout Cup Week, and with the support of Network 10’s broadcast, cup organisers will be encouraging everyone to contribute.
The Melbourne Cup Carnival and its partners have pledged to ensure a minimum $500,000 total is raised.
They are expecting to exceed this target.
The 2022 Lexus Melbourne Cup will be run at 3pm today, race seven on a 10-event card that starts at 10.45am and ends at 5.15pm.
Race eight on the program is a race In Memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
All publicly donated money received by GIVIT will be used to deliver assistance to people impacted by the floods that are occurring across Victoria and around Australia.
GIVIT is working with the Victorian, NSW and QLD Governments to manage donations. GIVIT works with local councils, recovery organisations, charities, outreach teams and community groups to identify exactly what's needed.
Victoria Racing Club came in for severe criticism when a specially constructed flood wall along the back straight of the course — bordering the Maribynong River — was blamed for causing severe damage to homes neighbouring the course.
The flood wall was approved in 2004 despite the objections from residents and local councils, to protect the racecourse from flooding.
