Cultures from around the world were on centre stage on Saturday, November 19, with Victorian School of Languages students putting on an end-of-year performance at Greater Shepparton Secondary College.

The show was a celebration of unity, tolerance and culture through song and dance, with Nathan Holt of the VSL organising the event.

VSL Hindi teacher Arunabha Banning said there were performances from Hindi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Urdu, Sinhalese, Arabic, Turkish, Albanian, Persian and Mandarin groups.

“It was a really vibrant event and it was great to come together and get to experience different cultures from the other classes,” she said.

Mrs Banning said it set the best example of “the beauty of Australia” in all diverse forms coming together.

“Adults learn through our kids and the kids show us how we can coexist and celebrate the good of each culture,” she said.

Mrs Banning said the VSL had 200 students enrolled from the ages of six to 16.

She encourages all students, if they are wanting to learn a new language, to join the VSL.

“It opens up a new way of communication and opens a whole new possibility for students, and is available for all school students across Shepparton,” Mrs Banning said.
