Since 2001, council, with the help of the community, has planted more than 94,000 native grasses, shrubs and trees on council land and at local schools.
This year, council is holding a National Tree Day event on Sunday, July 30 at the Seymour Resource Recovery Centre, 470 Seymour-Tooborac Rd, Hilldene.
The event will include a tour of the new Seymour Resource Recovery Centre to see how waste gets sorted, from 9.30am to 10am.
Then, from 10am to noon, visitors are invited to join a tree-planting session around the dam at the Resource Recovery Centre to improve water quality and create a habitat for native wildlife.
Council also supports local schools’ revegetation activities through the Grants for Plants program, which provides grants of up to $600 to local primary and secondary schools.
Mayor Fiona Stevens said every hand that helped plant a tree contributed to the richness of our local environment.
“Council is aware of the commitment our community has to caring for the local environment. Throughout the year we see people of all ages getting involved in tree planting and other sustainability activities,” Cr Stevens said.
“National Tree Day is not just an initiative; it is a pathway to realising our 2050 Community Vision.”
Local community groups have also registered their own National Tree Day events.
