The Corowa Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Society was established 144 years ago. This year marks the 142nd show with cancellations over the years due to the war, flood, insufficient volunteers and for the last two years Covid-19 pandemic.
Show society secretary Jan Mckenna said with communities support they are hoping to make the 2022 show an exciting, fun day for everyone to look forward to.
“The committee has worked hard to put together some great events including free entertainment,” she said.
“Entry to this year’s show has been reduced to just $5.00 for adults and free to all children and any person with a concession card of any description.”
Once through the gate, there is the usual sideshow alley, with show bags, show rides, food and many different stalls all selling something different.
The entertainment begins at 10.00 am and goes nonstop until 3.30 – 4.00 pm.
There is the animal nursery where you can sit and pet baby animals and see other animals you wouldn’t see at home.
Balloonatic Bruce will be roving all day handing out his balloon models. His talents go beyond the typical balloon artist, making unicorns, dinosaurs, teddy bears and so much more. Best of all, he will stage a magic show that is filled with fun and amazement.
John and Christine from John’s Reptile Awareness will be talking about reptiles and displaying many varieties. John will also give a talk on the best way to handle snakes in an unexpected confrontation as well as first aid advice.
Keep an eye out for a pirate who will be roaming around the showgrounds before staging two 30-minute shows with treasurer, adventure, imagination and junk! He will also be holding an hour-long circus workshop for the children.
For children three years and under, there will be sensory play with a nautical and ocean theme.
If you need to sit back and relax, the Albury Band will be playing music for two one-hour blocks with tunes all will enjoy.
The horse arena will be a spectacular sight this year. Ringmaster Sara Love has organised a very busy day for participants.
There are nine rings that will be running at the same time; four open rings, one breed ring, one stockhorse ring, Welsh qualifiers, the local Corowa Pony Club ring (pony club members can compete), and a fun ring where people who usually do not compete can enter with different classes.
The riders who are competing in these rings, are looking for their qualifications which enable them to ride at Sydney Royal and the Melbourne Royal, so it is a very important day for them, and Sara has put together a fabulous program which will enable them to gain their quals.
Be sure to visit the poultry pavilion and check out the turkey that took out the champion bird of the Sydney Royal Show winning against 50 other competitors.
Greg Vonarx is the steward in charge of the poultry. With a love of turkeys, it will be a great opportunity to have a chat with him.
For anyone wanting to be involved in the show, there are many sections of interest and at a cost of 50 cents per entry it is just great fun to put together what you enjoy doing and letting people see what talents are here in Corowa.
Keep the kids busy over the holidays. Have a look at the sections they can enter, junior cooking, junior horticulture, art, craft and junior needlework and photography.
Also don’t forget the showgirl/boy competition. Register your child on the day outside the secretary’s office from 11.30 am – 12.45 pm. Judging begins at 1.30 pm. There are sections ranging from under 3 years up to 16 – 18 years old. Rather than being judged on frilly dresses, hats and handbags, the judging is based on “What you would wear to an Agricultural Show”.
“Agricultural shows have long been the mainstay of country towns, and the committee hopes to bring back the excitement of looking forward to the show, just like the old days,” Ms Mckenna said.
“With an ageing committee who have worked tirelessly for 18 years, it would be great to see some young people step up and help keep the show going. It is not a huge commitment; meetings are not compulsory. Those interested should just be available to lend a hand.”
The Show Schedule is available at www.corowashow.com or pick up a hard copy at Gyles Newsagency, the Corowa Library, the craft shops in Corowa and Rutherglen or text Jan on 0427 331 148. Leave your name and address and one will be delivered to you.
