In fact, they’re just getting started.
With outstretched arms, the Cool Cat Rockers are embracing another year of their timeless dance moves.
“We’re a dancing club, we primarily dance rock ‘n’ roll, 50s and 60s style,” club president Stuart Barnes said.
“We’re also a social group – we do social outings as well as social nights.
“We have dances every year, but we’ll also do a social one where we have a one-piece or two-piece band here for our club members.”
On Tuesday nights, the music starts – Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Roy Head and The Traits – and the club’s 80-plus members stroll onto the dancefloor.
Movement flows, smiles are worn, and if someone does a two, one step instead of a one, two, it’s no problem – it’s all part of the fun of learning.
“For people that haven’t danced before, that’s very welcome ... and you’ll meet new people, dancing is very social,” club treasurer Heather Limbrick said.
In May, the Cool Cats are looking forward to a big dance at the Numurkah Town Hall with a “top Melbourne band” providing the beats to their rhythm.
“It’s open to the public, anyone can purchase tickets, and we get a lot of other dance clubs join in,” Ms Limbrick said.
Though the Cool Cats are in full swing this year, like all clubs in the region, there’s an urgency beyond an arrangement of steps, and that is keeping the doors open.
It may sound like a complex issue, but the solution is quite simple: more dancers.
“Having new members coming along and joining in keeps the club going,” Mr Barnes said.
The Cool Cat Rockers beginner dance classes start Tuesday, March 5, from 7pm to 8pm at the Kialla Central Hall, 135 Central Kialla Rd, Kialla.
Each lesson is $10 and is open to all ages. No partner or prior dance experience is required.
