This year, in partnership with Seymour Football and Netball Club, The Prince of Wales Hotel, Trawool Estate, Wine X Sam, GO Seymour and other local organisations, the Lions Club of Seymour Goulburn will be hosting a Clean Up Australia Day event in Seymour.
Following on from last year’s event, where Latitude 37 pub venues owner James Carlin assisted the Lions to put together the largest Clean Up Australia Day Seymour has ever seen, the Lions have big hopes that this year will see even more people getting involved.
Lions Clean Up Australia Day Kings Park site supervisor Bethany Scott said the event would symbolise the Lions’ dedication to promoting sustainability in the region.
“After the success of last year’s event, we have tremendous hopes of making each year bigger and better, while boosting the beauty of our precious home and our pride in our community,” Ms Scott said.
“We’ve extended our efforts to include locations all along Latitude 37: Tooborac, Seymour, Trawool, Yea and Molesworth.
“We think that our slice of Victoria boasts some of the most beautiful towns in our state and we’re determined to show this off to the rest of Australia and the world.
“The Lions Club International acknowledges the challenges being faced by this generation and future generations and we want to do our part to make the world a better place.
“Our commitment to the environment includes protecting nature and habitats by cleaning debris and shielding pollutants from harming ecosystems, marine life and the community.”
Ms Scott said the event would involve healthy competition in order to encourage the clean-up process.
Pictures will be shared on social media to measure who finds and clears the most litter and there will potentially be special prizes for whoever finds the most bizarre, the smallest, or the biggest item on the day.
Ms Scott said the event was a day to celebrate our nation, while also giving people a chance to do their part to service its needs.
“Not only is it a wonderful Australia-wide event, but it is our way of serving our community and building our sense of pride,” Ms Scott said.
“Personally, I feel this day is my ‘Australia Day’. I celebrate my love of my country by doing something more meaningful than waving a flag or drinking a beer.
“I’m prepared to really show what my country means to me and the respect I have for the land, our unique flora and fauna and my appreciation for the freedom we enjoy thanks to the sacrifices made by so many who came before us.
“I may not be risking my life, but it’s my little way of saying thank you to all those who have.”
The Seymour event will begin at 9am on Sunday and the Lions welcome all to attend and assist in whatever capacity you can.
