Parents and Lions gathered to watch primary school students from Grades 3 to 6 deliver a speech on a pre-selected topic at the zone 3-4 final.
Lions zone chairman Ian Whatley said he was pleased with all the speakers who presented on the day.
“This competition was very beneficial for students who are looking to enhance and develop confidence in their communication skills,” Mr Whatley said.
“The Lions Club received excellent support from the schools in making this day eventuate.”
Competing contestants came from primary schools in Echuca, Numurkah, Girgarre, Lockington and Tongala.
Students from Grades 3 and 4 were asked to speak about a destination they would like to visit and why.
Grade 5 and 6 students were asked to research a world-renowned person, and in a prepared speech, outline the individual’s background and their achievements.
Students were then asked an impromptu question: ‘If you could change the world in any way, what would you do?’
Faye Roberts, Reverend Alan Lockwood and Ray Robertson judged the contest.
Ms Roberts congratulated the contestants on their participation.
“This is a valuable experience that the students can draw on later in their adult life as they become involved in their vocation and community activities,” she said.
In the Grade 3/4 category, Kate Lluz from Twin Rivers Primary School in Echuca won first place, while Jasper Brown from St Joseph’s Primary School in Numurkah was the runner-up.
In Grade 5/6, Zarah Mendoza from St Mary’s Primary School in Echuca went home with first place and Jack Forbes from Tongala Primary School won second place.
The winners will present their topics at the Lions Regional Final in Girgarre on Sunday, August 28.
