The speed limit on Labuan Rd will be dropped to 80km/h from October 18.
The revised speed limit will be effective from Katamatite-Shepparton Rd to the Murray Valley Hwy.
The speed change follows calls from local government, politicians and community members for safety upgrades on the road after a fatal crash at the intersection of Labuan Rd and the Murray Valley Hwy on April 20 that killed five people.
Cobram’s Debbie Markey, 60, and four international workers — Pin-Yu Wang, Hsin-Yu Chen, Wai Yan Lam and Zih-Yao Chen – died after a car travelling on Labuan Rd went through the intersection and hit their ute, pushing it into the path of an oncoming truck.
The implementation of the reduced speed limit on Labuan Rd is expected to contribute to a decrease in the frequency and severity of road crashes in the area.
Moira Shire Council’s infrastructure services acting director Damien Burton said the drop in the speed limit was only the initial step in improving safety for Labuan Rd users.
“We have further plans in place to enhance safety along Labuan Rd and ensure the wellbeing of all road users,” he said.
Expressing deep concern for the ongoing road safety issues within Moira Shire, council’s chair administrator John Tanner highlighted the urgency for action.
“Moira Shire Council has monitored driver behaviour on Labuan Rd and other roads, with evidence showing poor driver behaviour that urgently needs attention,” he said.
“The frequency of fatal or serious injury incidents on our roads is alarming.
“We cannot stand idly by, and we are taking immediate measures to address this pressing issue.
“The impact on our community is profound.
“We are committed to exploring all available options to effect positive change and position ourselves as leaders not only within our community but also nationwide.”
Mr Burton urged all road users to exercise caution and responsibility.
“Every decision made on the road carries significant consequences, and it is essential for drivers to adjust their speed and behaviour according to prevailing road conditions,” he said.
