District 22 crews responded to 14 fire calls in the first 24 hours of 2025.
“It’s about average for a summer’s day,” District 22 acting assistant chief fire officer Rod Railton said.
Mr Railton said there was only one call that was possibly related to fireworks.
A blaze at Strathmerton, which burned 10 hectares of roadside and grassland, was among the calls that came in on Wednesday, January 1.
The fire was ignited by a wheel that came off a trailer.
It ended up burning along the roadside and into a neighbouring crop.
About 10 trucks and an aircraft were among the response, according to Mr Railton.
He said a number of trees had to be removed by an excavator following the fire, but the blaze had been completely extinguished.
Forest Fire Management Victoria also had firefighters out in the Shepparton area on New Year’s Day.
A fire at Reedy Swamp was reported around 2pm and burned just under a hectare of land.
The fire was contained around 5.30pm and Forest Fire Management Victoria resources were patrolling the area and blacking out any hot spots ahead of increased fire risks over the weekend.
Additional patrols were also planned over the weekend.
The cause of the Reedy Swamp fire is under investigation.
Victoria Police responded to the fire and a spokesperson said it was yet to be determined if it is suspicious.
Mr Railton, with CFA District 22, urged people to be aware and vigilant heading into the weekend.
“We’re moving toward another heatwave over the weekend,” he said.
Temperatures are expected to hit 40℃ in Shepparton on Saturday.
