At 1.39pm, three CFA crews responded to reports of a fire on Everard Rd in Kyabram.
A CFA spokesperson said crews found “as large amount of cars on fire”.
Later, they confirmed as many as 30 cars were on fire, and the fire spanned around 1000 square metres.
“The fire was caused from car crushing activities at the car wreckers,” the spokesperson said.
An excavator was on the scene.
In total, 19 emergency vehicles responded to the fire, which was categorised as ‘small’ on the VicEmergency App.
Units from Kyabram, Stanhope and Tongala responded.
Kyabram police blocked off Everard Rd where the scrap yard is located and Ambulance Victoria was also on the scene.
A ‘Stay Informed’ message was issued to residents in Kyabram by VicEmergency.
The message informed residents to keep roads clear for emergency service vehicles, to close windows if sensitive to smoke, and to turn off heating and cooling systems.
A CFA spokesperson said the “relevant power company” for the area was called to the scene of the fire.
It is believed power was cut for safety.
The Powercor website showed that residences in Tongala, Kyvalley, Kyabram, Koyuga, Timmering and Yambuna were left without power.
By 3pm, the fire was deemed under control.
Many west and northwest of Kyabram were left without power during a fire at the Kyabram Wrecking Yard.
