One such remarkable volunteer is Ian Appleby, who has been a TAC L2P mentor for nearly six years.
Ian's commitment to the TAC L2P program is unwavering. Over the years, he has been paired with eight young learner drivers, stepping in whenever other mentors were unavailable.
His total driving hours with 16 different learners exceeds 300 — an impressive feat that reflects his dedication.
What sets Ian apart is his unique perspective. As a pilot with endorsements for 32 different aircraft, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his mentoring role.
Ian enjoys the mental challenge of working with a diverse group of young people, helping them navigate the complexities of driving safely.
His primary goal is to instil safe driving habits, ensuring that each learner becomes a responsible road user.
For Ian, the joy lies in witnessing the transformation. When a learner receives their driver's licence, it opens up a world of opportunities—from job prospects to social activities.
Ian's role extends beyond teaching driving skills; it's about empowering the next generation.
Unlike teaching a family member, mentoring a learner driver requires a different approach.
He emphasises that the focus during driving sessions is solely on safety.
“It isn’t like teaching a child or other family member because you don’t bring normal life problems, like complaining about last nights’ dinner or doing homework into the car,” he said.
“We are only there to drive and show our learner how to be safe and avoid making bad decisions when behind the wheel of a vehicle.”
Instead, it's about imparting practical knowledge and fostering responsible decision-making behind the wheel.
Natalie Phillips, program co-ordinator at Benalla Rural City Council, acknowledged the vital role mentors play.
“Some volunteers have dedicated over a decade to the program, accumulating nearly 1,000 hours of driving time,” she said.
“However, with a growing waiting list, more mentors are needed.”
The Benalla TAC L2P program aims to assist 50 young people each month, emphasising the importance of community support.
In a new chapter, thanks to Benalla Rotary's initiative, the program now includes older learners aged 23 and above.
The trial program, launched in February 2024, has already seen its first successful learner pass the driving test after 30 hours of practice.
More than ten other older learners have expressed interest, highlighting the community's need for tailored programs that address road safety for all age groups.
