On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases.
IDAHOBIT commemorates this day and is a celebration of pride, progress and the partnerships within our community.
The event will run from noon to 2pm and will feature an array of free fun activities, delicious food, music and speeches from guest speakers as well as the raising of the Pride Progress flag.
Greater Shepparton City Council said it was honoured to host the community celebration in support of the Greater Shepparton LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee Action Plan.
The plan aims to work with the community to continue recognising and celebrating important cause days, including pride days of celebration and significance.
Mayor Shane Sali acknowledged the meaningful partnerships council had with the advisory committee and local agencies in the design and delivery of the celebration.
“Council is pleased to be hosting this event once again, demonstrating the positive working relationship council has with the Greater Shepparton LGBTIQA+ advisory committee and partners. We look forward to working on more projects and events in the future,” he said.
LGBTIQA+ advisory committee councillor representative and chair Sam Spinks said the event held a significant meaning for many in the community.
“The purpose of IDAHOBIT is to celebrate the progress made since then (May 17, 1990) while also raising awareness for the discrimination that LGBTIQA+ people still face,” she said.
“I encourage community members to come along to the Queen’s Gardens on Friday, May 17, and join in the IDAHOBIT activities. The event can be enjoyed by everyone.“
