“Thanks to Anthony and Vicki from Deni Auto Electrical for once again sponsoring the final draw of our Friday Night Mega Raffle,” the challenge committee said.
“$2,800 worth of Battery Powered Honda gear would look good in anyone’s garage, thanks for your support again guys.”
If you want a ticket, you better get in quick to avoid disappointment.
Entries for the challenge are still open too.
For more information about the schedule of events and ticket inclusions, go to www.edwardfishingchallenge com.au.
You can also register for the challenge and buy raffle tickets online by going to the 'book now' section of the website.
All money raised will go towards restocking the Edward Kolety River system with native fish species.
Naponda Farmers Market
The Naponda Farmers Market is back tomorrow, bringing with it all the lovely produce, food and giftware its known for.
Taking place every second Saturday of the month, the market is a fundraiser for the Naponda Hospital Auxiliary which supports Deniliquin Hospital.
Providing something for all, the markets are a fantastic opportunity to get out of the house as a family, or absolutely anyone.
The Naponda Farmers Market runs from 8am through until 12pm in Cressy St, Deniliquin, starting at the Edwardes St corner.
Blue Heelers’ first run
The Deniliquin Blue Heelers Rugby League Club had their inaugural training session on Wednesday.
The training session took place at the Rotary Park grounds, also used by the Deniliquin Drovers Rugby Union Club.
With two female players and another four male players, it shows that there is at least interest in rugby league returning to Deniliquin.
There is now something to build on.
The Blue Heelers must be able to field a men’s and women’s team, and not drop any games due to player availability, to play competitively this season.
The Blue Heelers will continue to train each Wednesday from 6.30pm.
School holidays and what to do
With a little under a month of school holidays remaining for children in town, parents might wonder what can be done to keep the kids busy.
The Edward River Library is holding a host of fun activities and events in the last few weeks of the term.
They include their ‘Learn to Paint’ event tomorrow from 2pm to 3pm, or maybe the kids are more interested in learning about virtual reality? The library has you covered, running their ‘Learn VR’ event on Tuesday, January 14.
Animal crossing
It was only a few weeks ago we placed a warning in this column about ducks and their little ducklings causing a bit of a traffic hazard around the town’s lagoons.
Well, now those ducklings have all grown up but are yet to leave the nest.
What we’re seeing as a result are large groups of full-size ducks taking to the roads to feed on dropped grain or leaf litter from trees.
In Edwardes St in particular, the ducks blend into the leaf litter alongside the Waring Gardens and can be a little difficult to see in low light conditions.
We suggest you take it easy and be prepared to stop if need be.
Not a bad idea in Edwardes St at this time of the year, anyway, as use of the skate park increases during the school holidays.
And the ducks are not finished breeding yet. There have been sightings of new clutches of the tiny feathered creatures around town.
CBD snakes
We’ve also used this column to warn you of snake and other reptile sightings since the warmer temperatures began.
We’re now hearing reports that some of these reptiles may not be coping with the heat as much as we think they would.
There have been some reports of snake sightings in CBD buildings.
Maybe we all need to invest in a snake of a different kind – a draft snake – to try and keep them from sliding in under the doors.
Sheep and now snakes – which animal will try to shop in our CBD next?
Back to normal?
How have you all gone getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas and New Year break?
While some of our team worked the whole way through (only stopping on Christmas Day and weekends) we know quite a few got a chance for a break and only returned to work this week.
It should be smooth sailing now, until Australia Day rolls around perhaps.
But of course we still have the school holidays to contend with.
Some people are away, but many more have come to Deniliquin to spend their summer on our river and explore our local attractions.
Please make them all feel welcome.
