The thought of Fryers St, Shepparton, heaving, chock-full of people draped in tinsel belting out Christmas carols is one that makes Aussie Hotel owner Paul Tsorbaris “relieved”.

It’s not the word many people would use to describe a street festival — excited, keen or happy might be more apt — but Mr Tsorbaris is relieved Shepparton icon Carols By Barrels will return on December 11.
The event started more than 30 years ago in a backyard, before moving to the Victoria Hotel, and has been held at the Aussie for more than two decades.
“I think it’s going to be huge. People are ready to come out; good riddance to coronavirus restrictions,” Mr Tsorbaris said.
“I expect a huge crowd and some great Christmas cheer.
“Shepparton council has been right behind us and they obviously want to see the town going back to normality.”
Mr Tsorbaris said he’d thrown his weight behind local musicians as well, with all performers to be from the Shepparton area after a torrid 12 months for live music.
Mr Tsorbaris said the 2021 edition had been planned and cancelled once already this year, but as COVID-19 vaccination rates climbed and restrictions started to ease he relaunched the event.
Carols by Barrels is on December 11 from 6pm at the Aussie Hotel.
Tickets are $20 from the bar or available on the night, with COVID-19 vaccination certificates required for entry.
