Detox Your Home is a free event where residents can register to dispose of household chemicals such as bleach, pesticides, weed killers, cleaning products, cosmetics and cooking oil.
The majority of chemicals collected at Detox your Home events will be recycled or used for suitable purposes, such as producing energy. Any chemicals that cannot be repurposed are safely disposed of after being treated.
Campaspe Shire Council chief executive officer Pauline Gordon said it was a great initiative to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals.
“Disposing of these items responsibly reduces the risk of poisoning, keeping your family, friends and pets safe, keeps toxic chemicals out of waterways and minimises environmental pollution and fire hazards,” she said.
“It is also a great opportunity to bring along and recycle other items that the Echuca Resource Recovery Centre accepts for free such as empty paint tins, household and automotive batteries, scrap metal, E-waste, some whitegoods, among other things.”
The Detox Your Home event will take place at the Echuca Resource Recovery Centre on Saturday, May 13, from 9am to noon. Entry is free but registrations are required.
