This is due to an earthquake many, many years ago which caused the land to the west of Gulpa Creek to be raised up by around 20m and is known as the Cadell Fault.
Evidence of this can be seen as you drive over Polly’s Bridge and then turn and look back to the right and left.
The fault continues down past Moira Homestead on the left and beside the Gulpa Creek towards Deniliquin for some distance on the right.
It’s well worth a walk (in summer) to check it out.
Another interesting fact is that the Murray River originally flowed through the southern end of town near Jones Street - evidenced by the river sand present in that area.
The fault caused it to change the river’s direction, sending it towards Echuca, and also creating the Edward River which flows through Deniliquin.

Six students from Mathoura Public School travelled to Sydney this week to compete in the NSW State PSSA Athletics Championships.
And Mathoura was a winner even before the event got underway when Matilda Eddy was chosen to recite the Competitors’ Oath in the Opening Ceremony.
Four of the youngsters - Jobe, Matilda, Georgie and Chanze - combined to contest the Nigel Bagley Relay while individual efforts were by Georgie in discus, Matilda the 1500m and 800m individual events, Katelyn the 1500m, Chanze the 200m sprint and Sophie the 100m sprint.
The events were held on Wednesday and yesterday so we will have to wait until next week to learn the results.

Mathoura Football Netball Club is seeking support for a fundraising venture next month.
The team will be catering for the Bunnaloo Campdraft on November 18 and 19.
They will be catering meals on Friday night, Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfasts.
People who can help out in the kitchen or the bar at any time would be made very welcome.
This is a great money earner for the club so willing workers should contact any committee members.

So keep a look out for it.

Congratulations girls. I hope it will be a successful season ahead.

It is great to hear that Wayne ‘Buggsie’ Couser is on the mend after recent major surgery in Bendigo.
There is talk that if his recovery continues at this rate he may soon be able to move out of ICU and take up residence in one of the wards.
While it won’t happen overnight, if he continues this way hopefully it won’t be much longer before we get to welcome him home.
Great going Bugs.
