Thankfully, the large tree at the swimming pool provided plenty of shelter for the more than 100 people who attended.
The morning started with some snags served by SES volunteers and coffee before the rain came through, but singer Bec Hance kept the Australian theme going, belting out classics including I Am Australian.
Master of ceremonies Bruce Smith was shocked to learn he was named Murchison's Citizen of the Year.
Mr Smith was described as a "competent and capable secretary, president and committee member of many Murchison service and sporting organisations.”
A visually humble recipient told the crowd the town had embraced him and made him feel welcome when he'd moved there 13 years ago.
“There's hundreds of people in this town who have done their bit over the years,” Mr Smith said.
“I congratulate all those who have gone before me . . . making this town as it is; it's a wonderful little place.
“There are people who pop on committees and it's wonderful that they can do it.
“For the people who nominated me, I'd like to hit you on the head,” Mr Smith joked.
“It's a great honour and I had no idea this would happen. Thanks to the people of Murchison for adopting a bloke from Nathalia and making me feel welcome.”
Taking out the Young Citizen of the Year award was Bree McLarty. The youngster was recognised for creating ‘Spoon Island’ in her family's front garden.
The garden brought happiness to community members during the height of COVID-19 restrictions.
In a short speech, Bree thanked her mum and dad and the Murchison community.
The winners of the Murchison colouring-in competition and the Christmas lights competition were also announced.
