More than 70 young ladies from across the region turned out in droves for the ‘I am a Girl’ come and try basketball day, supported by the NSW Government's strategic focus on women and girls in sport.
Basketball NSW’s Riverina regional development officer Isabel Forbes said she was oiverhwlemed at both attendance and the talents shown in drills and games.
"We had close to 80 girls attend the free basketball camp, where the mission was to introduce the game of basketball to as many girls as possible in a fun, female only environment.
“No matter the skill, every one of them could try something new and hopefully make some new friends along the way.
“The ‘I am a Girl - I can do anything’ program is all about initial participation and we encourage all the girls who already play basketball to bring along a friend who hasn't played before.
“Many girls developed their skills throughout the session, and surprised themselves with just how much they could achieve with a little practice.
“Some of the older girls jumped in and helped instruct for the day, and I want to thank Ruby Cowley, Amy Holloway and Bella Hillier.
“It was great to see these local basketball players giving back to the sport by helping the younger girls learn the skills - a credit to the Deniliquin Giants Junior Basketball.”
“John (Arthur) at the Deni Sports Stadium was fantastic in assisting me with set up, early access and assistance in promoting the event and Maddy Leiper was the camp mum for the day, and without her I would not have had the support I needed to make it successful and most importantly fun for all the girls.”
