Local sporting clubs have paid tribute to a young footballer from Castlemaine who died suddenly in his club’s change rooms recently.

Dallas Keogh-Frankling suffered a ruptured spleen before he collapsed and died after an under-18s game on May 27.
A social media movement to honour him was launched by the Castlemaine Football Netball Club and Keogh-Frankling family, tapping into a famous Australian sight.
Officials have encouraged the community to “put your boots out for Dallas”, a reflection of the moving fan-driven act of honouring cricketer Phillip Hughes by standing bats outside houses as a mark of respect.
“You can #putyourbootsoutforDallas by taking a photo, sharing to your socials and using the hashtag so that our community can see your support in real time,” the Castlemaine Football Club said.
“Let’s create a movement to honour Dal and show his family we are thinking of them.”
Both the Deni Rovers and Blighty Football Clubs participated in the movement during training late last week.
Peckish kookaburra
Still on the footy, there’s never a better testament to the food you’re serving on game day than if the wildlife are willing to brave the crowds to get some.
Spectators at the Rovers vs Mathoura match at Deniliquin Memorial Park on Saturday were surprised when a kookaburra sidled up to them in search of a snack.
Being surrounded by the Murray Valley Regional Park, seeing these beautiful birds - and others - scrounging for food is not new.
But for one to come so close in order to snag part of a dim sim? That took a few by surprise.
Luckily one of the club’s photographers - Rebecca Flisher - was on hand to capture the moment.
Deni episode to air
You may remember a report we did back in March on television personality Bill Classon being given a master class in Murray cod fishing within local waterways.
The Australian Fishing Network Fishing Show presenter was taken on a fishing tour by Ian Fisher, John Conallin and Rob Menadue.
They snagged 35 Murray cod between them over two days.
It is reported the episode will air this Sunday, June 11 from noon on 7MATE.
Make sure to tune in.
Warmer start
It’s now officially winter, and surprisingly the introduction to the season has been a little warmer than the chills we experienced in May.
The lowest recorded temperature in May was -0.8ºC on May 23, after which low temps barely increased above 10ºC for the rest of the month.
But in the first few days of June, we’ve already had two low temperatures above 10ºC.
Saturday and Sunday even soared to tops of 20ºC and a bit higher, making for a pleasant weekend.
The last time we had a top temp of 20ºC or above was on May 14 - with that day’s 22.9ºC the warmest temperature recorded for the month at Deni’s weather station.
Unfortunately, the trend is not expected to last. Rain is predicted for much of this week, with the weekend’s tops predicted to be about 14ºC.
