Mr Grant says the book teaches important lessons about bullying, while developing vocabulary and comprehension.
“It’s a book that follows the everyday life of a kid, and when he goes to school, he gets picked on,” he said.
“Then he finds practical jokes, and ways to get back at the kids that are picking on him.”
Mr Grant, a teacher at Berry Street School, said he was inspired to write the book from his own difficulty with reading when he was at school.
“I know when I was a kid, I didn’t want to read at all,” he said.
“I thought I’d try to write a book to make kids want to read more and help them out.”
Mr Grant included a glossary at the back of the book, as well as quizzes for readers to complete after they finish each chapter.
“Words that little kids might be unsure about, at the back of the book it tells them what those words mean,” he said.
“If you just gave the book to a kid, they can just read it, and just ask the questions as they go.”
It also means teachers do not have to plan lessons to use with the book.
“For teachers, they wouldn’t really need to set it up, it’s already set up in the book.”
