Councillor Bernie Hearn was elected to the top spot at the council’s meeting on Wednesday, November 10.
Cr Don Firth was elected deputy mayor.
Cr Hearn said it was an incredibly proud moment to be elected mayor.
“I am honoured to be elected as mayor of the rural city and I will continue to work hard for our vibrant and diverse community, to ensure it continues to prosper as we emerge from challenging times,” Cr Hearn said.
"I look forward to leading a unified council, representing the whole community and striving for further improvements and sound financial management.“
In her address to the council following her election, Cr Hearn thanked her fellow councillors for their support and confidence.
“I thank outgoing mayor Cr Claridge for his leadership over the past 12 months.
“I have admired his passion and commitment to the community, particularly during a year of significant stress, change and challenges for so many in our community.”
“I also congratulate my fellow councillors, management and staff on their achievements in representing our community,” Cr Hearn said.
Cr Hearn was first elected to the council in October 2016.
