After several years of COVID lockdowns, followed by the Rose City’s worst flooding in years, Benalla Show organisers were delighted to put on an event at the weekend.

Attendees flocked to town from across the region and interstate to enjoy the 2023 Benalla spring Show on October 20 and 21.
With the usual mix of horse and stock events, great food and drinks, and a range of fun-fair rides and games, there was something for everyone.
Volunteers from the Benalla Lions Club manned the gates and greeted attendees.
On Friday, blue skies and a warm sun lit up the showgrounds, and while Saturday was overcast, there was no rain, and temperatures were good.
On Saturday, the ferret races and dog high jump were crowd favourites, and local people brought their furry friends along to participate in the dog and animal parade.
Friday saw the return of the ever-popular Championship Dog Show.
One of its organisers, Julie Dickinson-Franks, said 388 dogs and 111 breeds were on show.
“Well, we’re thrilled to be running the dog shows today,” Dickinson-Franks said.
“Especially given the minor flood we had a fortnight ago.
“We have managed to have a good surface for the dogs. All the owners are saying how lovely it was for their dogs to run on.”
As always, the rides and side shows were a favourite among younger attendees.
Naomi Way was running the ‘Duck Catcher’ game. She said the kids were having a great time.
“Friday was a bit slow, but we’ve been non-stop today,” Ms Way said on Saturday.
“We love coming to Benalla, and this is the first time in a few years.
“So it’s nice to see all the smiling faces.”
The displays of produce and crafts were as popular as ever, and some unique animals were on show.
Besides all the champion horses, cows, chooks, and sheep, Snake Safe Victoria’s exhibit was packed on both days with some snakes and lizards for locals to hold.
And, of course, no spring show would be complete without a show bag, and several trucks were selling great variety, ensuring all youngsters left with a memento from the day.
