Benalla Mayor Bernie Hearn congratulated Mr Keane on his appointment.
“Peter was appointed after a rigorous recruitment process that saw more than 50 applicants apply for the role,” Cr Hearn said.
“He is an experienced senior executive who brings an outstanding combination of local government and commercial experience.
“We are confident that his strong project management, business, financial management and advocacy skills will ensure strong leadership of Council over the coming years.
“Councillors and staff look forward to working with him as we develop and deliver our new Council Plan.”
For the past two years, Mr Keane was director waste portfolio management office with the Council of Mayors South East Queensland.
Before that, he was the chief executive officer of Bunbury Harvey Regional Council.
He is a qualified mechanical engineer and a graduate of Deakin University’s Master of Business Administration program.
Mr Keane said he was honoured to have been selected as CEO of Benalla Rural City Council.
“I sincerely thank the Mayor and Councillors for their trust and confidence in me," he said.
"I look forward to working closely with the Mayor, Councillors, staff and the community to deliver positive outcomes for the region.
“On a personal front, my wife and I are excited to be relocating to this vibrant and welcoming community.”
