Current member Loch Lidgerwood said it initially inducted 29 members.
“In those days the club had quite a few trades people,” he said.
With the ability to undertake building works, it was active in projects that included rebuilding Benalla’s Scout hall.
Lions were also involved in building the Benalla Saleyards kiosk, a school camp at 15 Mile Creek and extending the town’s band hall.
“We have around 70 seats we maintain throughout Benalla,” Loch said.
“Other ventures we continue to be involved with are running the monthly lakeside market (with Benalla Rotary), the Anzac Day Breakfast and we give out trauma teddies to those in need.
“We also do the Bunnings sausage sizzle in Wangaratta, and in December, we do the Christmas carols.”
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
However, with membership at one of its lowest points since 1958, all the great work Lions do in Benalla and district could be in jeopardy.
The club is currently seeking new members to join in the mateship and help make a difference to the community.
