Village Cinemas general manager of marketing and sales Stacey Kwijas said the weekend was well attended.
“The release of Barbie and Oppenheimer has been a real pleasure to work on, and both films have exceeded our expectations,” she said.
“Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s third-highest opening film, only following The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
“Barbie now has the highest grossing opening weekend of a comedy of all time. The film opened to $21.5 million this weekend.”
Not only did Barbie break records, last weekend’s total box office take has made Australia’s top three.
“The two films helped to deliver the third-highest box office weekend in Australia of all time — only following the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame and the Boxing Day weekend in 2014,” Ms Kwijas said.
Ms Kwijas said thousands of customers watched both films, making for a full day of entertainment.
“We are excited to see audiences enjoying both films, and we already have over 3000 customers who have experienced the Barbenheimer double feature,” she said.
“The appetite to watch movies on the big screen is alive and well, and the level of excitement, and the amount of pink in our cinemas this weekend has been incredible to watch.”
